Growing Up
2023
Paper rubbing, embroidery, plaster and wallpaper
48 x 36 x 3/8 in.
Growing Up captures the intimate, familiar ritual of marking children’s heights on a door jamb. A rubbing taken from a door frame preserves the texture and grain of the wood. Hsieh uses embroidery as a mark making technique and has stitched names and ages into the paper with red thread—transforming temporary markings into lasting, hand-sewn records. By blending the domestic with the tactile, the work reflects on memory, care, and the passage of time within the home.
